Innovative toilet building created in Za’taari camp

We are proud to announce the completion of our collaboration with AKYAS and Emergency Architecture & Human Rights in a section of Za'atari Camp under the leadership of OXFAM to build an innovative toilet infrastructure.

Za'atari Camp, located close to Jordan´s northern border with Syria, is the largest Syrian refugee camp in the world. It was established in 2012 and currently hosts 80,000 refugees. More than half of them are children.

AKYAS is an innovator for sanitation solutions. AKYAS offers bags as a portable waste treatment system – in other words, AKYAS puts an entire expensive wastewater treatment plant into a single bag that is affordable, adaptable and portable.

EAHR is a very innovative Danish NGO specialising in construction using local materials, techniques and labor. The Sanitation Building was planned using local earth materials in an Adobe style. The workers were trained remotely - a great blueprint for future buildings.

AKYAS finished most of the construction by the end of May 2021. This includes a squat toilet in the Sanitation Facility in the Recycling Center; a seated toilet in the Sanitation Facility in the Community Center and finally, they installed the metal structure to hold the plastic cover and 4 Dataloggers in the Greenhouse.
