First project together with a government entity

The renovation at Githurai Primary School, serving 1’331 girls and 1’556 boys was initiated and completed thanks to financial participation from the Roysambu CDF (Constituency Development Fund). This is our first project which received funding from a government entity. It is a further crucial step in our ‘sanitation-biogas journey’ which started with our successful implementation at Ikunu Primary School, completed in 2023 with our local partner, Mobile Alert Toilets (MAT).

Githurai’s systems inauguration will take place at the beginning of the January 2026 school term. We have signed an MOU with the Constituency for further projects for 2026/27 (see below).

The implementation went very smoothly thanks to our trusted contractors. Two new toilet blocks were built: one with 20 stalls for girls and one for boys with 14 stalls and a urinal space for 10. The new ratios are 1:55 girls, 1:65 boys (previously 1:83 and 1:130 respectively).

We installed new handwashing stations for boys and girls.

The pipes are connected to Sistema.bio’s biogas digesters. The cow dung has been filled in order to start the ca. 3 week inoculation process. Everything will be ready for the students’ return in early January 2026: the biogas for the school’s kitchen, replacing the burning of firewood, should be flowing during the first week of school.
